Skialpinism and climbing at the end of 2010 at Tery hut in Slovakian High Tatras

Our combined (ski & climbing) group spent perfect days at Téryho chata (2015 m) in Malá Studená dolina in December 26–30, 2010. The skialpinism and snowboard part of the group consisted of nine people. The weather was quite nice, there were temperatures during the day from –14 to –18 C. The only exception was the last day, when the temperature reached –7 C. There were clear skies except two days.

For a pity, the amount of snow was quite critical. According to Miro Jilek, the amount of snow was even lower than a year ago. Ski descends were quite critical due to higher attention to rocks and stones in the powder snow. By the way, skiing was excellent, only skis were not fully happy.

On Sunday December 26, we arrived by bus, train and cars to High Tatras. We left the car in Dolný Smokovec and we continued on skins to Stary Smokovec. Then we proceeded to Hrebienok. Our five-member group arrived at Zamkovského chata, where we added a part of mountaineers, eat soup and drink some beers. Then we continued up the valley in the direction to Téry chata. The only two of us – Jana and Dusan – climbed whole route on skis. Above the weather was bad, so for all of Sunday we just came to hut.

Dinner was very good – soup and goulash. Older Bruder refused to be outdone and even improved his previous „result at the end of 2007“: http://www.ho-vsetin.com/view.php?… when he ate 18 dumplings with goulash. This time he gave in the first round again goulash with 18 dumplings. Then I bet with him if he eats another goulash with 6 dumplings. Ordered, and within moments bruder Honza consumed everything, so his record-breaking feat at the end of 2010 means two goulash and 24 dumplings together. We went to sleep around ten hours.

We get up around seven o'clock and whole group go out just after breakfast. Our skialpinism group sets off to for the first skiing to pas Sedielko (2372 m), declination from 35 to 40 degrees. The original intention is to look into Zadná Javorová dolina and to check the snow conditions at Malý Ladový štít (2611 m). In addition to parts of the saddle itself there is a lot of snow around the hill. Unfortunately, when viewed from Sedielko to Zadná Javorová dolina, there is almost no snow. The only option is to ski from Sedielko back down. Snow is with stones in the upper part, but rest of slope is excellent, so we do two descents.

After the second downhill we continue into the valley below, and start out on Žltá lávka (2310 m), maximum slope of 42 degrees. Lenka and Jana start a descent at the beginning of the couloir, while the remaining six guys climb upward. We stop in the ideal „bivouac“ (or rather machine-gun nest) about ten meters below the saddle. Ropák, Dusan and Libor leave skis and rucksacks there, and they go with the ice axes or poles to see the view from the saddle. We start downhill.

Matúš as the first skier release a small layer of snow on frozen surface. Thus, the narrowest part is no ideal. Part of our group was so happy with the downhill, that they do it once more.

Outside is a blizzard and poor visibility, but this does not deter us from the originally planned target to go to look at Chata pri Zelenom plese, one or more beers. The nine people start about half past eight from Téry chata on skis and Mišo on snowshoes. We were able to skin up to the fist slope, and climbed up with skis on backpacks to Baranie sedlo (2393 m). The slope from the saddle to the other side of Velká Zmrzlá dolina is 45 degrees in the first couloir. The stepness in the Flaška is smaller. The stepness on the other side to Malá Studená dolina is about 40 degrees.

We spent quite a long time with thinking about decision in Barenie sedlo – what to do due to bad visibility and snow condition. Finally, we decided to descend in the direction of Chata pri Zelenom plese. There was released thin snow slab in the introductory steep couloir, so that girls were not very happy with steep and icy slope. Conditions were much better in the lower part.

Lenka, Jana and me finished our skiing just above Flaška, whereas others skied down through Flaška. Jana and I skinned up to the upper couloir, Lenka climbed everything on crampons. The rest of climb to Baranie sedlo was quite easy and fast – as on stairs.

Girls descend on feet from Baranie sedlo some dozens of meters. I took my skis about 5 meters below pass, where the snow strip is wider than is the length of my skis. I just move a little on skis, and I released a small snow slab. The small avalanche fell down to the valley. Skiing down we looked for enough snow, so our skiing was in a little zigzag in places where there were enough snow either on plates or ice on the rocks. At the same time two more snow slabs were released.

We got almost the best weather on Wednesday. The temperature was quite low in the morning, –17 C. Later on the temperature increased and we skinned up the end of Malá Studená dolina – towards to Ladové sedlo (2341 m), maximum inclination 35 deg. Only five of us reached Ladové sedlo, rest remained about 10 meters below pass.

The warmest weather was on the last day with the temperature –7 C. Skies are clear without any clouds. Climbing group and Lenka descended to Smokovec, our skialpinism and snowboard group went to the end of Malá Studená dolina again. Matúš and I went in advance and we climbed right to Ladove sedlo. Miso is faster at the end of climb and overtook us.

Mišo released a small snow slab near rocks. The slab fell down to the valley about 50 cm from us. Others reached the end of climb and we relaxed with fantastic views to south. For a pity, there were quite a lot of rocks and stones under thick layer of powder snow on two places during the descend.

The end of the year 2010 in High Tatras was excellent except of bad snow conditions. We hope that future years will be much better with snow. Normal snow conditions we had lastly in 2008. We did several nice ski and snowboard descend, and only one ski was fully broken.
